Other workshops included compost simplified; understanding soils and plant nutrition; natural dyes using Hawaiian plants; organic gardening; fish cleaning and drying; la'au lapa'au and cleansing; making coconut milk and kulolo; coconut basket weaving; grafting mango and avocado trees and the study of traditional Hawaiian famine foods.
The goal of the workshop was to learn how to be self-sufficient and to learn more about the Hawaiian culture. Many of the activities that were learned will be incorporated into the agricultural program at Ka'u High School.

I enlisted the help of Julie Kaaloa to distribute 700 brochures.
April 13, 14, 15 Hidden Disabilities-Pac Rim Conference in Honolulu
Participated in break out session with Ho'oipo Cambra. My husband, Noel Light of Halo Riders On Crusade was also a speaker in the "talk story" session, "personal experiences and success stories on persons with ADD/ADHD"
Hidden Disabilities include: learning disabilities, Attention Deficit Disorder, Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), psychiatric disabilities, chronic health problems, environmental and other such disabilities that cannot be "seen." Despite protection under Federal disability law and growing awareness, the needs of people with disabilities that cannot be "seen" are often ignored, overlooked and misunderstood. Hidden disabilities profoundly affect many aspects of a person's learning, interactions with others, employment, and every day major life activities. The topic leaders are particularly interested in presentations that focus on personal success stories/role model advice, disclosure concerns, support systems, system change, policy issues, self-advocacy guidance and self-awareness, successful trainings and projects related to the afore mentioned subject areas. This topic area featured noted speakers, breakout sessions, panel discussions, and poster display/presentations.
04/06 Assisted my husband Butch Light of Halo Rider's, also a Christian Reverend perform a wedding ceremony.
This was a joyous time to celebrate this union and to fully appreciate one's recovery! Women of Hale Ho'omau catered the food, provided set up and clean up as a way to raise funds for their program.
03/08 Susan Kim of 4-H Sailor Scouts Club of Kona asked for assistance in putting their HOI grant together. In the end, they received a $2,000.00 grant # 08-010.04
to host a dance to target teens and to promote drug prevention and awareness
01/02 through the 9th. Worked extensively with Duke Giron of Malama Ina Keiki & West Hawaii Fatherhood Initiative
re: HOI grant proposal which he submitted in January. His organization received $2000.00
01/13/08 Received a copy of the CD that grant recipient Vernon Lincoln recorded. Spent time listening to
the CD so that I could critique it per his request. At first I was unsure what to make of his song.
The more I listened to it, the more the message began to sink in. His approach is very direct in conveying the powers Meth
can have over a person's life, if they choose to use drugs. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5fqA26eKnI4
01/15/08 HCRC meeting in Hilo
Duke does not have a computer or access to a fax, so I reviewed his grant, made a few suggestions as to how he could improve it and delivered it back to him at his place of work, Kealakehe Int. School.
Still working with the community to obtain a computer system for this organization.
2007
12/5/07 Hawaiian Music and Lifestyle Workshop... Our presentation day.
On December 5th, teens in recovery also known as "South Side Soljahz" did their presentation at the Pahala Plantation Cottages for kids and adults. It was a HUGE success!
12/08/07 Hawaiian Music and Lifestyle Workshop comes to a close.
Free Community Concert in Pahala
- Gathered feedback from our presentation on the 5th.
- Plans are in the works to do another presentation in April 2008 for a gathering like this one.
- Plans are in the works to do Island-wide presentations to all public high schools.
12/13/07 Gloria Camba is a teacher at Ka'u High and Pahala Elementary School. She asked me if I could provide a Santa Claus for the evening.
1) PA'I purchased a Santa Claus outfit from sales@costumesforsanta.com

12/14/07 Year end Healing Our Island liaison's meeting in Kona

1) As the HOI liaison, I went to talk to Duke about restructuring his grant proposal before resubmitting it.
2) As PA'I, I reviewed Duke's organizations brochure and I am currently helping him to bring it current; assist with finding him a sponsor to help with costs for
materials that he needs; assist him in finding a useable computer system.
12/22/07 Provided Santa Claus for the Filipino Club of Pahala at Community Center.
11/07 Continued telephone support with family in crisis.
The hardest thing is to get the family into a support group and keep them there until they realize that the addict cannot be forced to get help... They have to want to be helped first! All I can do is try to be patient and lend my support the best that I can. Sometimes it's just a matter of being a Good Listener.
11/29/07 Community Meeting / Ka'u High School Community Group outreach
Handed out Healing Our Island grant applications and said a few words about the grant program.
Also said a few words about the PA'I program and our outreach efforts to our communities.
I am the Kona Liaison for North and South Kona districts. I work with the other liaison's in their districts to share
information about the Healing Our Island grants that are available through the Research and Development office with
the County Of Hawaii.
11/26 through the 30th Preparation for presentation at the Hawaiian Music and Lifestyle Workshop,
HOI grant recipients The PA'I organization was asked to do a presentation for the children who were scholarship recipients for this workshop.
We decided to sway from the norm and bring "teens in recovery" to do this special presentation. The process of getting kids to go public is an arduous one.
1) Clear students absence with the school principal
2) Give students school credit for participating in this presentation
3) For students involved with Juvenile Drug Court the process is more rigorous and includes:
a) Clear students with Probation Officer
b) Clear students with Judge
c) Clear students with Drug Court Board
d) Arrange transportation for students from Kona to Pahala and back.
Collaborators:
Juvenile Drug Court, Judge Ronald Ibarra;
Juvenile Probation Dept., Kim Vallesca;
Drug Court Probation, Warren Kitaoka;
Kealakehe High School, ILC program, David Bliss;
Julie Kaaloa, PA'I - People Against Ice, transportation of youth;
Julia Neal and Elijah Navaro, Pahala Plantation Cottages / Kau Calendar Newspaper 928-9811

10/16th,17th,18th,19th/07 Halo Rider's On Crusade & PA'I working together with Ka'u High School Students
#1) in preparation for Cooking Competition to be held in Keauhou-Kona;
#2) working with UH Kona & Hilo to start a Culinary Program at Ka'u High School;
#3) cleaning food science kitchen;
#4) raising community awareness about the needs of children in the Vocational Tech classes.
a) The kitchen facilities in the agricultural building have not been in use for over seven years. My husband Butch who is the founder of Halo Rider's and Vo-Tech teacher at Ka'u High School and myself representing PA'I, have been working to get the kitchen facility cleaned, sanitized and painted, with the help of kids in the Vocational Tech program and the school custodians. We have solicited community help to repair the 3 broken gas stoves and to replace the rusted refrigerator. There were no pots, pans, dishes, cooking utensils, etc. for use in the food science program. Part of our efforts has been to raise community awareness about the lack of equipment for the children. To date, one stove has been repaired, with parts for the other two stoves on order. The refrigerator has been cleaned and repainted, although our hope is to get 2 new refrigerators. We are also hoping to get a dishwasher, washer & dryer.
b) Cooking Competition: We have been spending time after school with the students who are in the cooking competition. The kids have been divided into 2 groups, Team Ka'u and Team Kapono Cooker's. Each team has been practicing cooking 1 entree and 1 dessert entry... and eating what they cook, for an entire week. Foods for these practice sessions & the cook off, have been purchased by my husband and me. We have also purchased school t-shirts and aprons for each participant.
10/0/07 Cooking Competition at Keauhou-Kona, sponsored by KTA. All of our hard work paid off!
Our kids took 3rd place in the dessert category of the cooking competition which was quite remarkable considering that
Ka'u High School does not have a culinary program, while the other high schools that were involved in this competion all have a culinary program.
10/24th,25th,26th,27th,29th,30th/07 Once again, we entered our kids in a cooking competition... Kona Coffee Festival.
Working with new group of kids in preparation for recipe contest during the Kona Coffee Festival.
a) Each child had to come up with an original recipe in one or both categories, entree or dessert.
b) Practice sessions held after school hours at the agriculture building kitchen.
While none of our entries placed, it was a wonderful experience for the kids! So much fun!!!
Goals and Objectives: To work with our youth in drug prevention activities that keep them off the streets or hanging out with gangs.
Paramount are projects and/or activities that build good self esteem and strong character. Mentor's are desperately needed to help
keep our kids focused on staying in school; doing well in school; excelling at things that they are interested in such as sewing, cooking,
etc. Most recently have been the cooking competitions that we (my husband and I) have been preparing kids for. We provide
encouragement and resources that kids and their families cannot afford and the local school has little or no budget for.
09/07 Month of September was spent preparing for Recovery Day event which was held on
September 22nd at Konawaena High School cafeteria.
The Captain Cook Support Group and it's collaborative partners listed below, hosted Recovery Day on September 22nd in Kona. We worked extensively with Marilyn McIntosh of the Kona BISAC office who has first hand experience in working with people with addictions/recovery programs.
The Recovery Day event goal was to promote the societal benefits of alcohol and drug abuse treatment and to help convery the message that recovery from alcohol and drug use disorders, in all its forms, is possible.
"We firmly believe that only thruogh community activism can we bring about the change needed to heal our island from the devatating effects of addiction".
List of Collaborator's and Donor's:
BISAC Kona & Hilo, Marilyn McIntosh (planning committee, designed flyers, invitation letter & donation letter, announcer, collect donations, resource table, set up/take down, provided transportation to TLP) & Likeke Teanio; PA'I - People Against Ice (on the planning committee, resource booth, assist other booths, HOI grant table, announcements) Chris Light; KIDS OF HAWAII NEI (ran lunch table, on the planning committee) Dick Choy; TWM PETRA Over Comer's, (on the planning committee, resource booth) Pat CarMichael; King's Daughter's Minitries (on the planning committee, resource table) Helen Vailu'u; MIRACLE (Mother's In Recovery & Children Loving Each-Other) (on the planning committee, hula, clown & face painting) Michelle Wright; Neighborhood Place Of Kona (resource table) Wally Lau; Po'ailani (popcorn booth); Bridge House (shave ice booth); The Men of the Kona & Kohala TLP houses (BISAC) (popcorn & shave ice booths); Fatherhood Initiative/Malama Ina Keiki, (musician, announcer, resource table) Duke Giron; YMCA (Mr. Bates lll); LAVA & KOA Country (Sherry Brakken); KWXX (G Kruise); Big Island Drug Court (Judge Ronald Ibarra); Good 2 Go (band) (Bo); Mo'opuna (band) Likeke Teanio; BISAC Baby Safe (Jonelle Balucan) (resource table); Chris & Desiree Clifford (collected donations); Christine & Michael Farley; Dana Williams; Vicki Statler; Kirby Greenwell (signs & posters, transport things from BISAC to Konawaena); Amyta Fuller; Michael Larroque, Bill Cummings; JJ & Bethany Balucan (assist with set up resource tables); and Kealakekua Ranch Center; Konawaena High School Principal, Shawn Suzuki (use of the cafeteria) and many, many more!
The group of collaborator's definitely pulled through to make this event successul in every way! Everyone pulled more than their fair share and then some!
This year our collaborative efforts have increased to include many more organizations and individuals from throughout the Big Island. Those in recovery were anxious for this day when they'd be able to show the hard work , time and commitment they have to their sobriety. Men from the various TLP programs took charge of the shave ice and cotton candy stations; also helped with setting up for the event and clean up after we were done.
Without a doubt, meeting the Lt. Govenor was definitely the highlight for the TLP men. Perhaps for the first time they could see that it is possible to mingle with the community in general and with someone as important as the Lt. Govenor, if they are willing to remain clean and sober.
When the day first started, the TLP men were concerned about having their pictures taken. When the Lt. Govenor showed up, it seems that everyone wanted a picture taken with him. When it came time to take the group picture, the guys made it a point to request a copy of the picture.
08/06/07 Kona Drug Court Commencement Ceremony
Secured a $2,000.00 HOI grant for a group of women who wanted to offer their services as "hair dressers and nail technicians" to women in the Drug Court Program, BISAC, Lokahi treatment centers and Bridge House.
They felt that this will boost the morale and self esteem of women who are ready to re-enter society and the work force. Moreover, this will give the recipients the opportunity to meet other women who have substantial
recovery time and have gone on to become successful business owners and are willing to be recovery sponsors.

Delivered grant to Kona Mayor's office for pouching to Hilo.
Correspondence between myself, Laverne Omori who is with R&D - Kona Office, and concerned grant writers about delivery of grants to Hilo Research Development Office by the deadline date 10th of each month.
Kona grant writers felt it was unfair that West side of the Big Island were not given the same opportunity to deliver grants by the 4:30 pm delivery time as the East side of the Big Island.
Thanks to the efforts of Laverne Omori, we may now deliver grants to her office on the 10th. I have offered by help Laverne with grant collections and delivery to her office.
